Franchise FAQ
We’re looking for owners who understand that a chimney business is built on trust earned one home at a time. Here’s what we get asked most often by people considering joining Hearthstone Chimney Co.
Common Questions
Do I need chimney or home service experience to open a Hearthstone franchise?
No. We’ve trained teachers, veterans, sales managers, and firefighters into solid operators. What you need is a willingness to learn the trade, hire people who know more than you do on day one, and follow a system that’s been refined since 1984. Russell Haines started sweeping chimneys at nineteen, but our most successful franchisees came from outside the industry and built their knowledge alongside certified journeymen.
What is the total investment range to open a Hearthstone Chimney Co. location?
Total investment typically runs between $150,000 and $350,000 depending on your market size, whether you lease or buy vehicles, and your initial marketing push. That covers your franchise fee, equipment, inventory of professional-grade materials from DuraFlex, HeatShield, Gelco, Olympia Chimney, Famco, and Copperfield, uniforms, technology systems, and your first three months of operating capital. We don’t hide costs in footnotes. The number we discuss is the number you should plan for.
Is financing available for the initial investment?
Yes. We maintain relationships with third-party lenders who understand our model and have funded Hearthstone franchisees before. Many of our owners also use SBA-backed loans, home equity, or retirement account rollovers through ROBS arrangements. We don’t finance in-house, and we won’t push you toward any particular source. Our job is to make sure your business plan holds up to a lender’s scrutiny, which means honest projections and no inflated revenue promises.
What kind of territory and exclusivity do I receive?
You receive a protected territory defined by zip codes or county lines, depending on population density. No other Hearthstone Chimney Co. franchisee will market to or service homes inside your boundary. We don’t split territories or allow encroachment. Your exclusivity matters because chimney work is hyper-local; a homeowner in your town isn’t driving forty minutes for a sweep. We size territories so a single owner-operator can build to $800,000 to $1.2 million in annual revenue before hitting the ceiling, with room to add second crews.
How long is the initial training program?
Four weeks total. Two weeks at our headquarters in Pennsylvania, where you’ll work alongside Russell Haines and our master sweeps on live jobs, level-2 camera inspections, masonry repair, and the business systems that keep everything documented. Then two weeks in your own market with our opening team, making actual customer calls, writing actual estimates, and handling the first real problems before you’re on your own. You’ll also earn your CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep credential during this period, which we require and pay for.
What ongoing fees or royalties does Hearthstone charge?
We charge a flat monthly royalty, not a percentage of revenue, so you keep more as you grow. There’s also a modest monthly technology and marketing fee that covers your software platform, call center support, and pooled digital advertising in your territory. No hidden assessments, no mandatory purchases through us at markup. We make our money when you stay and expand, not when we squeeze you on supplies.
How long does it take to open my doors after signing?
Most franchisees open for business in 90 to 120 days from franchise agreement to first customer call. The variables are local licensing, vehicle upfitting, and how quickly you hire your lead technician. We don’t rush you out before you’re ready. The Keystone Standard applies to how we launch franchises too: done right, or we don’t open the doors yet.
What ongoing support does Hearthstone provide after I’m open?
A dedicated franchise business coach who knows your market, weekly operations calls during your first six months, annual recertification training, and 24/7 access to our technical hotline when you encounter a job you’ve never seen before. Our call center answers every customer call with a live person, day or night, so you’re never losing leads while you’re on a roof. We also handle your website, local SEO, and reputation management, because most of your customers will be homeowners 55 to 75 who found you through a Google search or a neighbor’s recommendation.
What does the ideal Hearthstone franchisee look like?
Someone who values a square deal, hires carefully, and understands that standing behind your work is cheaper than advertising to replace disappointed customers. You don’t need to be the best sweep in town; you need to be the one who shows up when you say, sends uniformed technicians who’ve been background-checked, and fixes it without arguing if something’s not right. Our K.E.Y.S. values code, Krafted right, Every time, Your home first, Standing behind it, isn’t a poster on the wall. It’s how we decide who we invite into this system.
What’s my next step if I want to learn more?
Call our franchise development line at (844) 803-1545. A real person will answer, because that’s how we operate. We’ll send you our franchise disclosure document, schedule a call with Russell Haines, and if it makes sense for both sides, you’ll spend a day in the field with one of our owners seeing exactly what the work looks like. No pressure, no deposit required to look. We’ve been serving local communities for over 42 years, and we’re only interested in franchisees who plan to be in their town thirty years from now. That kind of partnership takes time to get right.
Still Have Questions?
Call (844) 803-1545 and you’ll reach a live person, any hour of any day. Or submit the form below and we’ll call you back within one business day. We’re in no rush to sign the wrong person, and we won’t rush you either.
